Kathmandu, January 10 – Dinesh Shrestha, President of the Kathmandu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, called for the government to adopt bold and transformative policies to rejuvenate Nepal's sluggish economy. Speaking at the 4th Annual General Assembly of the Chamber, he emphasized the pivotal role of the private sector in the country’s economic development.
"With two major political parties in government, there's no reason for inaction. We need policies and laws that citizens will remember for generations, capable of transforming the nation’s economy," Shrestha remarked.
He highlighted issues such as high remittance inflows, sufficient liquidity in banks, and a conducive environment for aggressive reforms. However, he lamented the lack of decisive action to harness these advantages, stating, "What we lack is the intent and ambition to make bold decisions."
Shrestha urged the government to simplify tax policies, eliminate hurdles for businesses, and provide incentives for industries. He also advocated for measures to reduce import dependency, improve export competitiveness, and stabilize the economic environment.
He expressed concerns over the decline in consumer demand, the inefficiency of customs processes, and the financial burdens imposed on businesses by high interest rates and delayed government payments. "The private sector is not looking for protection but equal opportunities to compete, along with supportive and stable policies," he asserted.
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh as the Chief Guest, along with various business leaders and government officials. Shrestha concluded his speech by urging collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector to create a robust and sustainable economic future for Nepal.
